Chapter 16

“You’ve gotta cut the guy a little slack.” Darryl looked a lot like his brother. He was older, and heavier, blunting his good bone structure. Salt and pepper showed in his unshaven face, his head bald. Is this what Doyle would become one day, Jen wondered?

“Why?” Lil asked. Andy half-jogged across the grass, finally joining them. The workers carried on, picking up litter in the background.

“He hasn’t been out that long,” Darryl said. “I’m just putting him up until he gets on his feet.”

“Out of where?” Jen asked.

“I don’t know if that’s any of your business,” Darryl said.

“If he tried to kill me, if he stole from me, it’s my business,” Lil’s words were firm.

Darryl’s eyes crinkled, as if he were in pain. “Doyle wouldn’t hurt anybody. He’s just a little mixed up in his head. He gets obsessed over things, but the meds get him through it.”

“Doyle was released from a mental facility?” Andy asked.

“He’s a good kid. Really.”

“Any idea how he got access to a city truck?” Lil asked.

Again, the pained expression. “I thought I lost my keys for a few days. They turned up again like magic. Which is good, because I would’ve been fired.”

“Doyle might have taken them,” Lil said. “Could he get a truck with your set of keys?”

Darryl nodded. “One of them unlocks the key locker at the maintenance yard. We did notice the bumper on Truck 10 was beat up. But those are heavy-duty trucks. They get beat up a lot. I can’t imagine him taking a truck just to run into you. That’s not like him.”

“You said he got obsessed about things,” Jen said. “Is one of those things tattoos?”

With a sigh, he nodded. “He started watching the shows on TV years ago. He’d track down the artists, and if they were close enough, he’d get ink from them. He traveled as far as Las Vegas for one dude. Doyle had some kind of breakdown out there in the desert. The state committed him when he got home. Delusional, they said. He’s fine now.”

Jen didn’t think so. “Do you know if he’s interested in tattooing himself? Does he draw a lot?”

“Nah. My brother can’t draw a straight line with a ruler. But he always says that some of the best artists don’t know how to draw. They just trace things, use a computer,” Darryl said.

Feeling slighted, Jen folded her arms. Lil jumped back in. “Did he have any skill in that regard? Digital design, computer drawing?”

“No. He doesn’t even own a computer. I can’t see him doing tattoos even if he wanted to. He’s just not talented.” Darryl rose. “I gotta get back to supervising.”

“Sorry to tell you this,” Lil said, “but the police are probably going to call on you. They might ask you the same questions.”

They would ask a lot more than that, Jen knew.

“Do we really need to get the cops involved? Look, I can pay you for the damage to your car. To replace whatever went missing after it was wrecked,” Darryl said.
